As conker experts battle it out at the world championships 150 miles away in Northhampshire, contestants more locally in Lodsworth will be competing for the ninth Bonkers For Conkers championships held at Langham Brewery.
Once again there is expected to be hot competition on Sunday, October 9, for the honours at both senior and junior level in the contest which has been hosted by Langham Brewery for almost a decade.
Organiser and co-director of the brewery Lesley Foulkes told the Observer: “It’s the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness again and time for the annual competition. Fearless junior and senior players will be fighting to the finish for the honour of being Conker Champion and for the coveted Langhams Conker Senior Cup and Junior plate.”
Goggles, gauntlets and hard hats will be provided and championship rules will be the order of the day.
Last year £500 was raised for the Chestnut Tree Hospice. This year the target is £750: “So come along on Sunday and enjoy a fabulous family day. There will be mini steam engine rides, face painting and cake decorating, craft workshops, a range of excellent stalls and a local hog roast and homemade cakes -and of course a well stocked bar,” said Lesley.
