THE A286 has been flooded both ways between The Drive, Chichester, and Chichester Road, Midhurst, causing traffic delays this morning (January 24).
Various sections of the A286 between Chichester and Midhurst are flooded after the River Lavant burst its banks.
Though no flood warning has been issued for the area by the Environment Agency, it has put in place a notice of ‘possible flooding’, a general early notification of possible flooding, known as a flood alert.
The agency said: “High groundwater levels are keeping the level of the River Lavant high.
“There is a low risk of property flooding. To help us manage water levels the Lavant Flood Alleviation scheme is open.
“With the increase in river levels north of Chichester, we would expect to see some road disruption around the villages from East Lavant to East Dean, particularly along the A286.
“With high groundwater levels in the area the level on the River Lavant will continue to stay high during this period. We are monitoring the situation and will update this message as necessary.”
