Bignor Roman Villa prepares for new season

AFTER a tough season last year, Bignor Roman Villa is preparing to welcome visitors at the start of their new tourist season on March 1.

Manager of the site Lisa Tupper said although Bignor was an idyllic location, it was not all plain sailing for the Tupper family who had owned the villa for more than 200 years since it was discovered when George Tupper hit a large stone while ploughing his land in 1811.

“The combination of bad weather and high-profile events such as the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games meant visitor numbers saw a fall. We rely totally on admission and tearoom sales in order to keep the villa open to the public.”

But it was not all doom and gloom. Bignor was awarded the Sandford Award for educational excellence in the heritage sector last year.
