Countryman’s Day 2011 at Balls Cross

IT was a day for the countryman’s dog at Balls Cross, near Petworth, when the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt Supporters held their annual event which draws dog people from across the South.

The main attractions at Countryman’s Day 2011 were the classes for terriers and both large and small lurchers, but there was also dog agility, gundog scurries, lurcher obedience, terrier racing and the family dog show, followed by fun classes.

The terrier classes were judged by Ann Brewer with 26 classes covering every type of rough and smooth-coated, bitch and dog, fell, border, Lakeland, veteran, progeny, Jack Russell and more.

The show champion title went to a Jack Russell called Smartie, owned by Ted Harris, which is now qualified for the Countryman’s Weekly Championship at the Midland Game Fair as well as the National Working Terrier Federation’s Champion of Champions at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire.

The lurcher classes were judged by John Ellis and John Walker with the ultimate show champion being Bailey, owned by James Whiteman from Upper Beeding. Reserve was Belle owned by Rogers Powell from Ashtead.

However, none of their classes were as big as some of those in the family dog show where one class had over 30 entries.

West Highland terriers were judged against mastiffs, King Charles Cavalier spaniels against German Shepherds and seven-year-old ‘veterans’ against those of more than twice that age.

Other interests included a horn-blowing and holloaing class for juniors, amateurs and professionals, won respectively by Archie Hogan from Graffham, Peter Sherratt, Charles Homan and Dave Rees, who now lays the trails for the hunt.
