CHRIS Loversidge and her husband Richard played a pivotal role in the planning of the Grange Centre at Midhurst, nearly four decades ago.

They were keen squash players who wanted somewhere to play and were the first to take to the new courts when they were opened in 1981.

Now they have been invited to play the inaugural game in the new centre when it opens to the public on Monday.

At the helm will be Mike Boyce, who has been manager of the Grange since 2009 and continues the role in the new building.

“We can’t wait to welcome the first visitors and we hope they will be as impressed as we are,” said Cllr Eileen Lintill, Chichester District Council’s cabinet member for leisure.

As soon as the new centre in front of South Pond is up and running, demolition of the old building will begin.

“Although the centre will be open,” continued Cllr Lintill, “there will continue to be some disruption on-site as the old centre is removed – and so we want to prepare people for this.

“The finished works to the car park and landscaping will be completed early in the summer.”
