Dreams Come True set to leave Midhurst

Dreams Come True, the national charity on a mission to bring joy to children who are terminally or seriously ill, looks set to leave its Midhurst headquarters in the New Year.

Chief Executive Peter Newman said the lease at the Knockhundred Row offices had expired and the charity was now looking for a permanent new home with disabled access.

But he said trustees were hoping to find offices close to Midhurst: “We have made lots of important relationships in the West Sussex area,” he said, “and we are keen to keep those relationships. Our scope is to remain within ten miles of Midhurst.”

He said the charity had been looking at Chichester, Haslemere and Petersfield locations as well as all the rural areas between them and Midhurst.

One of the premises already examined by Dreams Come True is the Bedford Road Industrial site at Petersfield which has a railway station and easy access to the main A3 road.

But Mr Newman told the Observer: “At the moment we are not in a position to make an announcement as to where we are going.”

“We want our new headquarters to have disabled access so that families and ‘dream’ children can come in to see us.

“There is no way of getting someone with mobility problems to our current offices. We have had situations where children in wheelchairs have had to be carried upstairs.”

“In the end the decision is taken by the trustees and the process of negotiating the lease is still under way.”

Dreams Come True moved to Midhurst in l991 after spending its first three years in offices at Brighton.

The ‘first dream’ was organised in l982 but it was not until 1988 that it was registered as an independent charity.

Over the past three years the charity has made some 330 dreams come true each year.
