A GARDEN inspired by television gardener Monty Don drew visitors for a fund raising cream tea at Egdean House.

John and Jan Shepherd again hosted the annual summer weekend fundraiser for St Bartholomew’s Church at Egdean.

But this year there was a chance to view the new part of the garden which will feature in the garden show Big Dreams, Small Spaces on BBC2 this autumn.

John and Jan spent nine months designing and building the garden for the arrival of John’s mum Maggie, who is to move into the new extension.

Jan read Monty Don was about to start a new television series. She contacted him and ‘before we knew it, he was walking up the drive with a helping hand’.

Christine Dallyn, secretary to Egdean Parochial Church Council said: “Our road signs and publicity in the Petworth Festival programme helped to draw many people who had never visited Egdean Church before and everyone enjoyed viewing the newly landscaped garden. Thanks to everyone who supported the weekend by baking cakes and sampling our wares – all-in-all a successful weekend.”

More than £300 was raised for church funds.
