ONE heroic man came to the rescue of a woman in Fernhurst after flooding damaged the roots of a tree and caused it to come crashing down on her car, trapping her inside.

Oliver Blackwell was first on the scene in Vann Road.

“I thought at first the car had stopped by the tree but as I got closer I could see the car was caught in the branches of the oak and there was a very frightened woman inside shouting for help.

“She was unable to get out of the driver’s door as that was the side the tree had fallen, and with great difficulty I managed to break some branches off on the passenger side so she could climb out.

“The tree was still sinking slowly, the car was giving way, and she had been unable to get to her mobile phone. “

“Her greatest fright was that her daughter, who lives in Fernhurst, is about to get married and she would not be able to make the wedding.

“The air bags had gone off, she had hurt her nose, and I hurt my back pulling branches but had no idea until it was all over.

“She was very shaken and stressed and sat in my car until the police arrived.

“The road was closed for several hours while the oak tree was cleared.

“Very kindly she came to thank me the next morning - I hope all is well.”
