Fittleworth runner completes marathon despite broken foot

Fittleworth Flyer Jenny Castle is not living up to the name of her running club right now. She has a foot in plaster as a result of injury in the London Marathon.

Despite breaking a metatarsal, she battled on and completed the race in 4hr 36min.

Now she and fellow marathoner Jeremy Castle, from Arundel, are busy collecting the 1,450 sponsorship they have raised for the Pulborough-based Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention.

Jenny said the support of the crowds and her sponsors spurred her on to finish the race, although she was in pain.

Jeremy Castle limped home in six hours after badly spraining his knee when he narrowly avoided a pile-up of fallen runners at the 14-mile stage of the marathon.

He said: "I reached mile 14 in two hours but after the injury, it took me another four hours to get round. It was the thought of the money my sponsors had pledged to me that kept me going – I had to finish!"

Both runners said they had chosen to support the Mary How Trust because its health screenings help the people of Sussex to spot the early signs of serious illness.

The trust was set up in 1988 in memory of Mary How, a young mother of two who died from bowel cancer. Earlier detection and treatment of the disease could have saved her life.

A series of fundraising events and activities is planned to mark its 21st anniversary this year.
