FLY-TIPPING in Chichester district’s countryside costs taxpayers around £30,000 a year.

This is when waste is dumped on to land which is not licensed to accept waste, and the waste generally consists of household waste, large domestic items like fridges and furniture, garden refuse, commercial waste, clinical waste and tyres.

“Fly-tipping is an illegal practice that costs the council taxpayer a significant amount of money each year,” said a district council spokeswoman.

“There were 499 reported incidents last year (2012/13). We estimate the cost of clearing up fly-tipping for this council over the past five years has been around £30,000 a year.

“In addition, West Sussex County Council has to pay the costs for landfilling this material. Private landowners have to bear the cost and inconvenience for clearing fly-tips from their land.

“The clearance work from public land is carried out by our street cleaning team, but occasionally we have to get a specialist company to clear hazardous material such as asbestos.

“We ask the public to please report any incidents of illegal fly-tipping and we will attempt to clear them up as soon as possible.

“Where we have eye-witness accounts or the perpetrators leave evidence, we can also take enforcement action. This includes issuing warning letters, issuing fixed penalty notices and prosecuting people and companies. We have had six prosecutions for fly-tipping in the past five years.”
