GALLERY: Crowds turn out for Countryman's Day near Petworth

The searing heat deterred neither dogs nor humans from turning out in force for the annual Countryman's Day at Balls Cross, near Petworth.

The event, organised by the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt Supporters Club, drew a record crowd to see dogs of all working disciplines – from terriers and lurchers to hounds and gundogs – show off their abilities.

Three gundog scurries were the biggest moneyspinners for hunt funds, but there was plenty more to see, including a parade of hounds, terrier and lurcher championships, lurcher obedience, terrier racing, a family dog obedience class, a ferret show and a display by the South Downs Vintage Tractor Club.

A new feature on Sunday, July 27, was a scarcecrow competition.

Charles Homan, from the organisers, said this was introduced as something different and fun.

"We didn't have many entries this time, but we are hoping it will grow into a big competition in the future," he added.

The success of the show overall demonstrated the continuing support for country sports and the CLC hunt, Mr Homan said.
