GALLERY: Fallow deer fawn looked after by the huntsman

Hounds of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt have an unusual companion on their daily walks in Petworth Park - a fallow deer fawn.

Bam Bam was abandoned by his mother almost at huntsman Adrian 'Sage' Thompson's garden gate, when he was about a day old.

Sage and his partner, Karen Barker, bottle-fed him and were amazed that he survived. And now, at nine weeks old, the young deer regularly joins hounds on exercise in the park.

His presence also helps junior recruits to the pack to learn deer are not to be chased.

Petworth Park is home to the largest herd of privately-owned fallow in the country but when Bam Bam grows up, he will not rejoin them because he will have become too tame with dogs and humans for his own good.

Plans have already been made to re-home him with a private herd which roams in a less public area.
