'˜Help us stop Midhurst being turned into huge urban town'

Constance Spek said she recently visited Midhurst, West Sussex and was impressed by its high regard for natural beauty and cultural heritage.

She said her Canadian Midhurst which changed its name in 1864 due to ‘a homesick Englishman’ was also rural with 3,500 people nestled beside a pure cold water creek amid swaths of fertile farmland and the Minesing Wetlands.

“It’s one of the prettiest spots in all of Ontario, Canada, but sadly, our wonderful rural home is now under attack by property developers who want to turn our peaceful village into a hub of 30,000 people.”

She said there were plans for the creek to receive seven Olympic seized pools of treated sewage every day, a mile upstream from the ‘ecological wonder’ of the Minesing Wetalnds. “A myriad of endangered and sensitive species will be disrupted, perhaps irrevocably.

“As ever in these modern David versus Goliath fights, though, we have a lot less money than do our adversaries. How grateful we would be for any contributions from our ‘elder brother’ in England!

“Together, we can save the places we love, the farms which feed us and the special environments wild creatures require.”
