THE Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt (CLC) is celebrating after a landmark win.
Hunt members are thrilled to celebrate their first ever win of the inter-hunt relay race at the South of England Show, held over three days at Ardingley.
It is an invitation-only event offered to local hunts, but as the CLC is on the boundary of the area it is some years since they were invited.
So the success was particularly sweet.
Hunt master and team member Vicki Wilkins was delighted.
“We have a squad of about eight riders, from whom we choose the team for the day depending on what the competition includes.
“Sometimes you have to open gates or cross a bridge but this time the rider had to pick up – and replace – a drink from a plywood butler!
“And that is between jumping half a dozen cross country fences and passing the relay whip to the next rider.”
The hunt won their early heat against the Southdown and Eridge, the semi-finals against the Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds and the final, to the resounding cheers of the supporters, against the Mid-Surry Draghounds.
The team was made up of Vicki Wilkins riding Solie, Coco Allingham on Alfie, James Robertson on Welly and Rachael Morley on Carrot.
In the competition, teams must include both men and women, someone over 40 and someone under 25.
