Raising money at the races

A RACE night organised by Midhurst and Petworth Rotary and Inner Wheel clubs raised £3,750 for sports clubs in the area.

More than 1,600 people attended the evening at Midhurst Rother College, compèred by John Barrett with the help of retired auctioneer and Rotarian Eddie Lintott.

Many sports clubs were represented, including Midhurst Cricket and Rugby, Midhurst and Easebourne Football, Lodsworth Sports and Stedham Bowls, Cricket, Football and Stoolball clubs.

The Jackson-Stops & Staff Derby began with Witch of the Wood coming home first to the delight of owner Velia Hall.

The Macdonald Oates Solicitors Scramble saw Welsh Beauty, owned by Sian Mitchell finish first. The Stockley Challenge had Ellamallamoo putting money in the pocket of owner Alan Austin.

Eddie Lintott then auctioned eight horses to run in The Saltus Investment Novices Chase. Other races included the Allnutt Time Trials, The Rotherhill Nursery Stakes and The Goodale Mardle.

The Woodcroft Dental Handicap saw aptly-named horses Brian’s Magic, Victoria’s Secret, A Bridge too Far, Root Canal, Crowning Glory, Scale and Polish, Gnashers and Charting by Numbers go under the hammer.
