IT WAS the end of an era when Midhurst town councillor Ted Dummer stepped down from his role as chairman of the planning committee.

It was a post he had held for a quarter of a century and fellow town councillors marked the occasion when council chairman John Etherington presented him with an engraved tankard.

Ted was first elected to the town council in May 1976 and at the annual meeting that year, he joined the cemetery committee, playing field committee and general purposes sub-committee.

By 1981 he was also a member of the home defence planning committee – renamed the civil emergencies committee in 1982.

Ted first joined the planning committee at the 1983 annual meeting and was elected chairman in 1989.

Paying tribute to Ted’s years of service, Colin Hughes told fellow members of the planning committee: “You have kept good order at meetings for a long, long time.

“There have been no major mishaps and you have done a lot of good things.”

Gordon McAra has taken over as chairman of the planning committee.

Ted remains on the committee as vice-chairman.
