PLANS to turn the former Richard Gardner Antiques shop in Petworth into a Morrisons have now been quashed – by the Co-op.

The Co-operative group, which has a store opposite the empty Swan House building in Market Square, has submitted a planning application to the South Downs National Park for the premises.

The proposal is for an enlarged convenience store, ‘in order to provide an enhanced shopping facility for residents’, with a minor change to external paving to make the shop accessible.

Last year Morrisons submitted a bid for the vacant grade-II listed building, but residents voiced concerns over delivery lorries causing traffic build-up along the narrow roads.

The Co-op plan states: “An analysis of the delivery process can be completed once the store is trading and management will monitor deliveries on a weekly basis to ensure no congestion or disruption to traffic flow occurs.”

The application can be viewed at www.southdowns.gov.uk reference SDNP/13/06000/FUL.
