MP Andrew Tyrie was put in the hot seat by young constituents when he visited Fernhurst Primary School.

The Chichester MP joined teachers and pupils for their morning assembly for a session of Christmas carol singing.

He then sat down with the children for a special question and answer session taking in a range of topical issues.

Children asked about his work as an MP and some of the issues he faced.

Much of the focus was on the life and work of Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa who had died the night before the MP’s visit to the Fernhurst school.

Fernhurst villagers have recently called on Mr Tyrie was help in their fight against plans by Celtique Energie for an exploratory well to drill for shale oil and gas on Nine Acre Copse, a site on the edge of Fernhurst.

He has expressed strong support for fracking, but has also voiced concern about allowing it in the new national park. He is said to be preparing to oppose fracking on the Fernhurst site, in what could be a test case for shale exploration in national parks.

He has told constituents he is ‘very unlikely’ to support an application to drill an exploratory well in the village.
