ROYAL Mail postman John Jupp added Barlavington Manor care home to his usual round so he could deliver a special letter.
It was the 100th birthday of Nan Ely and John usually delivers her mail to her home in West Chiltington, but he made the extra journey to the care home at Barlavington so he could personally hand over her birthday card sent from the queen.
And among the other guests at the 100th birthday celebrations organised by her family and friends, was South Downs MP Nick Herbert who also popped in to toast Mrs Ely’s centenary.
Mrs Ely raised her glass and thanked her guests for helping her to mark the occasion, quipping ‘only fools celebrate getting older’, a quote attributed to George Bernard Shaw.
Last Tuesday (March 25) the Royal Mail issued a set of ten commemorative stamps featuring remarkable people born in 1914, the same year Mrs Ely was born. They include the late Sir Alec Guinness, Dylan Thomas and Kenneth More.
After the celebrations, Nick Herbert said: “I was honoured to be invited to join Mrs Ely for her centenary celebration.
“She is a remarkable lady, still active and sharp, quite an inspiration to us all.
“It was a pleasure to join her friends and family at this very special birthday party.”
