COWDRAY Park Polo Club has announced the appointment of Peter Barfoot as its new chairman.

Peter takes over from Robin Butler who has retired from the post.

An experienced horseman and the biggest producer of fresh sweetcorn in Europe, he named his polo team Maiz Dulce – the literal translation from Spanish.

Peter started playing polo in 1995 with the New Forest Polo Club where he later became club chairman and remained until recently as its treasurer.

Fourteen years ago he decided he would like to play more competitive polo on Cowdray’s famous Lawns and joined Cowdray Park Polo Club where, with his polo team, Maiz Dulce, he has played at 4, 6, 8 and 12 goal levels.

Peter said he was delighted to be invited to take on the post of club chairman.

“It would be difficult to replicate the special Cowdray atmosphere anywhere else,” he said.

“In my opinion, Cowdray Park is the finest example of a polo club in the world with a superb location, the greatest pitches, meticulously run tournaments and a laid-back and friendly atmosphere.

“I know all the playing members really well and I also look forward to meeting as many of the non-playing members as possible.”

Peter is a producer of ‘exotic’ vegetables.

He currently has 5,000 acres in cultivation in Southern England and a further 7,000 acres in Senegal and works in partnership with farmers in thirty other countries.

His product range can be found on the shelves of all the major high street retailers.

One thousand acres alone are dedicated to asparagus on his farms near Chichester, the Broadlands Estate in Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight.

In total, 3,000 tonnes of vegetables are handled per week in West Sussex with packaging and distribution continuing 24 hours a day.

He employs 500 full time staff which can swell to over 1,000 during the summer.

Peter’s daughter handles a similar operation in Spain, dispatching trucks to the UK, and his son Jon is commercial director of the company.
