New Year’s Honours: Penelope Keith and John Lippiett on the list

THE New Year’s Honours were announced last night, and there were several from the Observer area who were given accolades.

Actress Penelope Keith, Chichester Festival Theatre favourite, became a Dame after being named in the list.

The theatre stalwart, was given the accolade for her services to the arts and to charity.

Dame Penelope is known for her performances as frightfully well-to-do characters in sitcoms such as To The Manor Born and The Good Life.

After a career which has involved playing the landed gentry with her crisp diction, the 73-year-old actress has herself become titled, after being made a dame for her services to the arts and to charity.

Bosham’s rear admiral Richard John Lippiett received a CBE – one of the highest accolades in this year’s New Years Honours.

He is the chief executive of the The Mary Rose Trust in Portsmouth, and received a CBE for services to British heritage.

David Mark Spofforth from Arundel received an OBE for services to accountancy profession, as president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

William Weller, 78, from Horsham was given an MBE for his services to Chichester Cathedral and to arts in West Sussex.

He was the first chairman of the Chichester Cathedral Restoration and Development Trust raising money for the fabric repairs of the cathedral building.

Pauline Carder, chairman of the Arundel Museum Society received an MBE for voluntary services to heritage.

Elaine Maggs was awarded an MBE for services to he community in Haslemere, and Robert Serman was also given an MBE for services to conservation and community in the town.

Robert Sillett was awarded an MBE for services to the community in Billingshurst, and Bryan Fayley was awarded a BEM for services to the community in Haslemere.
