Newcomers welcomed to Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray hunt
The Countryside Alliance’s nationwide ‘Newcomers to Hunting Week’ has started early in Sussex and the masters of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt have already hosted their Newcomers Day.
It was open to everyone - young and old, complete beginners and those returning after a break.
The crowd that turned up to enjoy the day of simulated hunting at Lowfold Farm, Wisborough Green, far exceeded expectations.
Joint master Robin Muir said they had reckoned on around 50 people but stopped counting when the number reached 111.
He added: “Although we are usually sticklers for correct dress, this day was an exception. People could come in what they liked as long as they were comfortable.
“The response has been overwhelming. We are thrilled so many came out and we hope very much they will join us again.”
Tim Lee, another master, explained the finer points of the hunting day and experienced riders were on hand to guide the newcomers through their paces.
Most then slipped their chaperones to enjoy a day of scent-trailing over the Lowfold and Lordings countryside.
By midday dozens of newcomers had jumped the timber fences dotted around the farm and were ready for the infamous hedges, formidable enough for veterans but happily tackled by the beginners.
