Organisers hoping for Heyshott fireworks triumph

Remember, remember the fifth of November ... and this year bonfire night will be celebrated in Heyshott and Milland on the traditional night.

Heyshott will be hosting its traditional family bonfire and fireworks spectacle, which has been running for more than 50 years, on Saturday on the Village Green by the Unicorn Pub.

Its unique torchlight procession will as usual meander through the village led by a pipe band.

Torches are on sale at 6.30pm from the bus stop at Hoyle Lane at £3 each, but there only 200 on sale so visitors are advised to arrive early.

There will be lots to do for all the family with stalls serving soup, jacket potatoes, sausages and a licensed bar.

A Punch and Judy show starts at 7.30pm and the spectacular firework display is just after 8pm.

The event is free and organisers encourage as many people to attend as possible but add: “We would hope all those who come will support the raffle and give a donation to ensure we can continue the event next year.”

After the huge success of last year’s event the Milland Bonfire and Fireworks Committee are looking forward to putting on an even better show this year.

“We had a perfect, clear night and our best ever crowd and were flattered by the number of people who called to praise the event,” said spokesman Andy Coe. “Naturally this year we’re aiming to go one better and have worked hard to ensure the event has something for everyone and we’re very pleased that The Hanging Tree band will be playing to entertain us before the fireworks kick off.”

The event will include as usual, a hog roast and mulled wine along with a best guy competition for children and pumpkin competitions.

The fun all kicks off when the gates open at 6pm on Saturday on the Milland Recreation Field. The event is organised by a large team from the village led by a committee comprising Andy Coe, Justin Whitehouse and John Collier.

Anyone who would like more details or to enter the best guy or pumpkin competitions should call Andy Coe on 01428 741514. Tickets are available from The Rising Sun.

Villagers in Cocking are celebrating bonfire night on Saturday outside their new village hall.
