Owners withdraw plans for change

THE new owners of Midhurst Granaries have withdrawn a planning application to make changes to the former grain warehouse in Bepton Road after objections from Chichester District Council.

The authority’s historic buildings adviser said elements of the scheme were unacceptable.

Pets Corner had applied for consent for alterations to the shop front and rear elevation of the main granary building, alterations to the yard-facing elevation of a link building and change of use of the first floor of the link building to offices.

But Ian Wightman, who advises the district council on historic buildings, said the proposal for the street-facing elevation of the granaries failed to retain or enhance the distinctiveness of the Victorian building which was an asset to the character of the Midhurst conservation area.

The original function of the building remained ‘legible and distinctive as a commercial structure’ and should be retained within the street scene, Mr Wightman said.

He was also critical of the plans for the link building. While its location within the courtyard was less prominent, its character as a commercial and loading facility would be ‘completely lost’. Pets Corner has withdrawn the scheme after being advised it faced refusal.
