A PETWORTH couple have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
And Doreen and Bryan Hill say the key to a happy marriage is being great friends.
“Doreen was working in a Fittleworth shop and I was renovating two houses nearby, working as a carpenter and joiner,” said Bryan.
“It was her lovely smile that caught my eye.
“She would walk past at dinnertime every day and after a while, I started to walk her home.
“That was in 1952. After I finished my National Service, working as a Royal Engineer, we married.”
The pair wed at Fittleworth Chapel in 1954, later moving to Petworth where they started their family.
They had two boys, but tragically lost one son in a car accident in 1976.
Their other son Graham, 52, has a 16-year-old son who attends the Weald School.
“My grandson keeps me fit,” added Bryan.
The couple will be celebrating with a meal, and spending the evening with friends.
Doreen, a former dinner lady at Petworth’s Herbert Shiner school, said: “We just enjoy going out together and we have always got on really well.
“Bryan likes to play golf so I join him, but don’t play golf myself.
“I will just stroll around the course.
“We are companions really, and have always been very family-orientated.”
