A BUSINESSMAN from Petworth has paid a visit to Downing Street as part of an initiative to support small businesses.

Alex Rees, founder of Rugs of Petworth, and the newly-elected chairman of the Petworth business association, met George Osborne at number 11 to promote the launch of Small Business Saturday which encouraged Britain’s shoppers to buy from the high street on Saturday (December 7).

He said: “I am delighted to be chosen as one of the 100 featured businesses.

“Having opened at the height of the banking crisis in 2008 and weathered the difficult start-up years during a recession, I’m hopeful we’re now moving from ‘survive’ to ‘thrive’.

“The initiative is great news for Petworth and reinforces how small businesses are the lifeblood of the community.

“Petworth’s blend of new and long-established businesses offers visitors a truly unique shopping experience on their very own doorstep.

“We believe our independent approach to commerce has contributed significantly to the success of our town, keeping it dynamic and helping it thrive.”
