Royal Oak closes down – for now

A landmark pub at the southern entrance to Midhurst has closed down suddenly.

The Royal Oak, officially in West Lavington parish, is deserted.

But the chain which owns it, Enterprise Inns, said this week the closure was only temporary.

"Every effort is being made to re-open it as soon as possible," a spokeswoman said.

She declined to comment on reports the previous landlord had left unexpectedly.

The pub, set between Chichester Road and Oaklands Lane, West Lavington, occupies one of the largest sites in the Midhurst area. It has a large car park, beer garden and children's play area, and the property itself is extensive.

Enterprise Inns also owns the Crown Inn in central Midhurst which was put on the market several weeks ago with no set conditions for its future use, subject to the necessary planning consents. It is understood currently to be under offer.
