POLO players and enthusiasts are getting set for an exciting line-up of events at Cowdray Park this summer.
The draw for the 2014 Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup has taken place, with representatives of all 14 teams entered taking part.
Last year’s winners, Zacara, again with ten-goal player Facundo Pieres at the front door, will defend the title of British Open Champions.
Co-finalists Dubai, with world number one Adolfo Cambiaso, sees a new addition to the team in the shape of seven-goal Argentine player Diego Cavanagh.
Brand-new teams are Halcyon Gallery with four English professionals making an attempt to lift the coveted Gold Cup, King Power, whose Patron ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabba has signed up ten-goal player Gonzalito Pieres, and El Rosario with two-goal patron José Peñafiel bringing in Fran Elizalde, Salvador Ulloa and Australian player Rob Archibald.
The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open begins on June 24.
The first match of the tournament will be the Carlos Gracida Memorial Trophy.
A new cup has been endowed by Charles and Lila Pearson in memory of the Mexican player who died as a result of a polo accident in February this year.
Members of his family, including his two sons, will be present for the inaugural match on the lawns one ground which was the scene of all ten of his Gold Cup victories, a record which has never been equalled.
The initial group phase of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup continues until the knock-out phase starts, with quarter finals on the weekend of July 12 and 13.
Semi-finals have a new slot this year and will be played on July 16.
