A NEW short breaks information directory is set to help families with children with special needs and disabilities.

Launched by West Sussex County Council, the directory has symbols so parents and carers can see what is available in the area.

Short breaks help children with disabilities try new experiences and increase their confidence, while allowing parents and
carers time to rest or spend time with other family members.

Peter Evans, cabinet member for children, start of life, said: “Last year more than 1,500 disabled children and young people benefited from a short break.

“The breaks are a lifeline for many families, and
help them to cope with the day-to-day demands of caring for a disabled child.”

West Sussex County Council recommended plans to close the Cherries respite centre in Chichester in favour of children having short breaks at home or elsewhere in the county.

Copies of the directory can be downloaded from {http:\\www.westsussex.gov.uk/shortbreaks|West Sussex County Council}
