A DRIVE to improve the county’s roads have stepped up a gear, according to West Sussex County Council.
The council has accelerated its £30m Better Roads scheme, to repair the worst rural and residential roads in preparation for the winter.
The work for the Better Roads programme was scheduled to last for two years, but work so far has been completed ahead of schedule.
Cabinet member for highways and transport, Pieter Montyn said: “We made good use of the summer weather and within four months half the streets due to be treated in the Better Roads programme have been done.
“We have been able to draw down £1.5m from next year’s budget so we can do work originally planned for 2015 now.
“This means we can get ten per cent of next year’s programme done a year early.”
