West Sussex fire service wants scrap cars

GOT an old car you’re thinking of scrapping?

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is again appealing for people to donate scrap cars to help firefighters hone their road traffic collision rescue skills.

A number of fire stations across the county are in need of extra cars for crews to train on and practice the latest preparation, stabilisation and cutting techniques they need when rescuing casualties from life-threatening car crashes.

Richard Davy from the fire service said: “Attending road traffic collisions and being able to quickly and safely rescue people trapped in their cars is a core part of a firefighter’s role and undoubtedly saves many lives each year. Getting practical ‘hands on’ training is obviously a vital part of maintaining and developing those rescue skills.

“It could be a matter of life or death when we arrive at an incident, with often only a narrow window of opportunity to either make space for medical stabilisation or rapid casualty removal to facilitate some of the more complicated medical procedures, so having cars to practice on is crucial.

“That’s why we are urging anyone thinking of scrapping their car to consider donating it to us. We can arrange for the car to be picked up free of charge, have all the necessary paperwork processed and the car dropped at the station to us.”

If you are interested in donating your car to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, in the first instance, please contact 01243 642880 (office hours) or email frs.media@westsussex.gov.uk

@4 – Your point? Its not the fault of the Fire Service that they were called out to these incidents, once they have been called they have a duty to investigate, even if it turns out to be something like a radiator flooding or smoke coming from an overused power socket, your dig should instead be at the morons who called the emergency services for such trivial matters. A better statement to make would have been ‘ given most of these call outs were non emergency callouts, how many serious emergencies were left unattended or were arrived at late because the crews were out visiting these idiots’? Also, through no fault of their own, how much time was wasted in regards to ‘RTC - 2 cars - no persons trapped - small spillage of fuel sanded - traffic control maintained by F&RS until arrival of recovery truck removed cars from road’ surely it should be the police who wait around until the recovering trucks arrived, again not the fault of the fire service.

Why all the snooty comments? These lads and lasses provide a life saving service to our area, usually at a low wage, or low given the danger they put themselves in front of for us on a daily basis, and are continually under funded just like our ambulance, Nurse and police force. I would suspect the reason they are asking for scrap donations is they have had some kind of funding cut for training and whilst I don’t currently have a car they can have, I would consider them first off if i was just going to scrap mine. @ 3 - No amount of practice at saving lives can ever be enough, they also need to refresh as well as hone their skills, give them a break, these men and women provide a great and needed service to us all, it is not their fault they are underfunded and need to seek training and funding opportunities outside of the usual pittance they receive.

Sounds like you you may have been conned my friend. My view is that the fire service should take their teams to the scrap yard and practice. That way they would have a huge choice of cars and the situation would be more realistic as they would have to have all the gear there. There would be no popping back into the station to get something, just like a real accident scene.

I gave them my old Micra just before Xmas. I hope the fire service have got a grip on the scrap man they use. We agreed a time and place for him to pick up the car by text He turned up four hours early at the wrong place. Called me at work demanding to know where I was. He picked up the car later that day and quized me about my reasons for wanting to donate a still drivable car. I have now recived a change of ownership note from the DVLA but no acknowledgement from the fire service. I am still not sure if it was scraped or if the fire service ever got to use it.
