Man arrested in West Sussex over MP message allegations

A man has been arrested in West Sussex this morning by detectives investigating allegations of malicious messages sent to two MPs, police have confirmed (Wednesday, February 22).

A Metropolitan Police statement said detectives arrested a 73-year-old man at 8.50am on suspicion of sending offensive or threatening electronic communications over social media.

Allegations were made by the victims – two as-yet unnamed MPs – on July 13 and July 20, Scotland Yard confirmed.

A spokesman said: “Detectives investigating allegations of malicious communications via social media to two Members of Parliament have arrested a 73-year-old man on suspicion of sending offensive/threatening electronic communications.

“The man was arrested in West Sussex at approximately 08.50hrs today. He is currently in custody at a West Sussex police station.

“After an assessment, an investigation was started by the Met’s counter terrorism command in liaison with the Met’s parliamentary and diplomatic protection command.

“These are not being treated as terrorist incidents.”
