The family of Ryan Lock have set up a fundraising page to pay for a memorial in his honour.
A former chef, the 20-year-old is said to have died near Raqqa while fighting Islamic State on December 21, having volunteered with the Kurdish milita.
His body was repatriated last month and his family are aiming to raise £5,000 to have ‘a special place’ for people to pay their respects.
A message on the Justgiving page reads: “In response to the many offers of support we have created this page in memory of Ryan Lock.
“Ryan was twenty years old, he went to Syria to fight for a cause he believed in.
“Sadly Ryan lost his life in Syria, and in preparation for him coming home we are setting up this page to raise money to have a memorial made for him, so his family can visit his special place to pay their respects to a very much loved young man.
“We greatly appreciate your support.”
So far, the page has raised nearly £1,500, with numerous messages of support expressing admiration and respect for Mr Lock’s actions.
