THANKS to Midhurst Rother College and sponsors Seven Fish and The Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa, the final of Rotary Young Chef 2014 has taken place.
The college held two rounds with 14 to 15-year-olds from Year 10 taking the entrants down from 15 to five finalists.
The sponsors who judged the final were Shannon Wood, operations director for Seven Fish, Martin Hadden, executive head chef of HSS Hotels based at The Spread Eagle, and chairman of judges Trina Duncan, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef.
All competitors were tasked with cooking two courses in two hours and there was a wonderful mixture of cuisine including pizza, curry, risotto and Swedish meatballs.
Winner Bobbie Dale, who used to live in Malawi, served up Malawian dishes.
The close competition saw only a two-point difference between the final three.
In third place was Gemma Brownbill with Amalfi-baked lemons with mozzarella and bread sticks and vegetable pizza, while Jackson Green came second with Kabanossi consommé and honey-marinated chicken, lemon and thyme risotto.
Overall winner Bobbie Dale cooked M’batata biscuits for her starter followed by maize and vegetable dish Nsima with vegetable Ndiwo.
All competitors were congratulated by the judges and presented with a Rotary certificate, with the first three receiving prizes of Lakeland and Waterstone’s vouchers.
