The Royal British Legion Midhurst and District Standard will be carried this year at the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall by Laura Parker.

At 20 yeas old she is likely to be the youngest Standard Bearer taking part in the Festival.

Laura became the Legion Standard Bearer while she was a member of the Midhurst Detachment of the ACF.

She has attended several Parades and Remembrances Services over the past three years and was recently placed second in the Sussex Standard Bearers’ competition.

Acts of remembrance will take place across the Midhurst and Petworth area as people remember those who died two world wars and other conflicts since.

On Friday November 11 there will be a short ceremony at 11am at the war memorial in Church Hill, Midhurst. On Saturday evening (November 12) a recital of Remembrance and Reflection takes place at the parish church at 7.30pm. It includes speeches from Agincourt to Iraq, Kindertransport to the Falklands as well as both world wars. The Kindertransport children are from the Sunday School and the Ignite youth group, all of whom attend either the primary school or Midhurst Rother College.

On Sunday, November 13 there will be a ceremony at the war memorial at 10.50am with the two minutes silence at 11am followed by the laying of wreaths. The service continues in the church. Church Hill and Red Lion Street will be closed from 10.30am-11.20am. There will be a Remembrance Sunday service at Woolbeding Church at 3pm.

The service in St Mary’s Church, Petworth, starts at 3pm on Sunday and is preceded by a march from the Royal British Legion Club in Grove Street, led by Petworth Town Band. It ends with the placing of wreaths on the war memorial.
