There are currently ten vacancies for staff at the hospital - nearly half the number needed to run it safely.
The SCT requires 12 registered nurses and nine health care assistants - a total of 21 staff. Currently there are only six nurses and 5 assistants.
They are recruiting for six more nurses and four assistants.
Medical director of the SCT Richard Quirk said after the meeting: ““We know how important this ward is to local people and we are doing everything we can to get it up and running as soon as possible.”
“There was a fantastic turnout at the meeting we co-hosted with the Friends, and we are going to need the on-going support of the local community to get the ward open again. This campaign with the Observer and the hospital Friends is really important. We are hopeful with the help of the community we can find the nurses we need to get the ward open again.”
