New Midhurst road signs aim to ban lorries

LONG-AWAITED width restrictions have finally been installed in the historic centre of Midhurst in a bid to stop huge lorries damaging its ancient buildings.

The width restriction notices have been placed at the junction of North Street and Knockhundred Row and at the top end of Chichester Road where vehicles enter the town from the south.

Gordon McAra told fellow town councillors he welcomed the much-needed signage as Cowdray Estate-owned Sussex House on the corner of West Street and Red Lion Street had recently been refurbished as two new shops and the Swan pub across the road had also been revamped ‘and the last thing we want is for a huge lorry to come along and rip off the facades’.
