A new Midhurst focussed recruiting campaign has been launched to find nurses after a staff shortage forced the inpatient ward at the community hospital to close six weeks ago.

The Bailey Unit, an inpatient ward caring for elderly people who have been discharged from St Richards Hospital in Chichester and other patients from the greater Midhurst area, was temporarily closed.

The new campaign is being led by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCT) the Friends of Midhurst Community Hospital and the Observer.

It was inspired by suggestions at a crowded public meeting in Midhurst called to explain the reasons behind the closure.

A recent advertising campaign by SCT has already found some of the staff needed, and there were further interviews in Midhurst last week, but the trust says up to six registered nurses are still needed to reopen.

Health officials at the public meeting were repeatedly told recruitment drives had to be more local.

One speaker said: “This area is quite unique, it’s over the Downs - it’s like the Himalayas, you have to recruit locally in the Midhurst area,”

The ‘Midhurst Community Hospital Needs You!” campaign features bold graphics and a clear message to all registered nurses in Midhurst and surrounding areas.

It will be rolled out on posters, banners, targeted facebook adverts, and in newspapers across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Residents can request a poster by emailing scftcommunications@nhs.net

SCT has invested in advertising, working with local colleges, and looking internationally. It has also talked with other NHS organisations about creating shared posts more attractive to new recruits.

The NHS is also working with the Friends to look at a range of options for subsidised nursing accommodation in the area.

Dr Richard Quirk from SCT said, “We know how important this ward is to local people and we are doing everything we can to get it up and running as soon as possible.”
