PLANS to turn Hatton House and The Gables in Midhurst’s Bepton Road into homes are being opposed by Midhurst town councillors.
The South Downs National Park Authority has received a planning application to change the use of Hatton House from offices to a single dwelling and change the use of The Gables from offices to two flats.
At a meeting of the town council’s planning committee on Monday evening members objected to the plans.
They said several large planning applications for residential development had already been approved in the area and there was no demonstrable need for more residential accommodation.
As Midhurst developed, the committee added, there would be a greater need for office accommodation and the units at Hatton House would suit the needs of small and medium sized businesses which may want to relocate there.
Members said they believed the application failed to safeguard business floor space in accordance with the national park’s agreed policy.
