COMPETITORS at a Petworth Park triathlon will be racing alongside two Olympic athletes.

At the first event of its kind to be held at Petworth Park, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee – the brothers who won Olympic gold and bronze in the triathlon at London 2012 – will be competing at the Macmillan Brownlee Tri South on Sunday, June 15 in the park.

The pair will be taking part in the sprint relay, one of three triathlon disciplines to be held in and around the 700-acre National Trust deer park.

Rob Jackson, general manager at Petworth Park, said: “We are thrilled that Petworth has been chosen to host the Macmillan Brownlee Tri for the south of England and I am very much looking forward to the day itself.

“An event of this nature helps to keep alive centuries of sporting heritage within Petworth Park and is a wonderful showcase for the property, the town and the South Downs National Park.”

The first Brownlee Tri was held last year at the National Trust’s property Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire.

The brothers set up the Brownlee Tri as part of the legacy of London 2012 to encourage people of all ages to get involved in triathlons.

The event will include sprint and super-sprint triathlon distance events for individuals.

There will be youth, junior and adult categories, and a sprint relay, providing opportunities for both seasoned triathletes and newcomers to participate.

The swimming legs will take place in the Capability Brown serpentine lake,
while the running and cycling will be on the many tracks and pathways of the deer park.

There will be a programme of entertainment for spectators and a catering company onsite to provide food and drinks.

Macmillan Cancer Support is the charity partner for the Brownlee brothers’ Triathlon Series.

The charity is also looking for volunteer cheerers to help on the day.
