A FIRE crew commander from Petworth has been given an award for his outstanding service.

Gary Maidment was presented with the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, instituted by Royal Warrant to honour those who have given long and meritorious service. Medals were presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Susan Pyper, who is the Queen’s representative within the county.

The award is presented only if the recipient’s character and conduct has been worthy throughout 20 years of service – the subscription on the medal
is ‘For Exemplary Fire Service’.

After three years’ service at Petworth fire station, Gary advanced to crew commander, helping new members with their training, including his son Josh.

Gary’s interests include fishing, caravanning and training the latest addition to his household, Rosie the springer spaniel who has trained as a search and rescue dog.

He has achieved his outstanding record with the support of his colleagues but, more importantly, from his wife Claire.
