A GEORGIAN property in Petworth, once home to a celebrated photographer from Victorian times, is to go under the auctioneer’s hammer.

Virginia Cottage in Lombard Street is being sold by land and property auctioneers Clive Emson in November.

Emma Attrell, senior auction valuer, said: “There will be a lot of interest in Virginia Cottage, originally built as a studio for the noted Petworth photographer Walter Kevis.”

After his marriage to Emma Earle in 1877, Walter, a former footman at Petworth House, became a portrait photographer and aromatic tobacconist in Lombard Street.

Walter, who died in 1924 at the age of 71, captured rural people and landscapes in East Sussex, including at Petworth House, in exquisite detail.

Thousands of his ‘time-capsule’ glass plate negatives were discovered in 1950, in the then-abandoned studio, by fellow photographer George Garland.
