COMMUNITY leaders took time out to examine plans for the new long-awaited £8m community and leisure centre after it was announced work was finally due to start.

The joint project which is being led by Chichester District Council (CDC) with funding from West Sussex County Council and a £500,000 grant negotiated by Midhurst town councillors from the Monument Trust, is scheduled to open in spring 2014.

Town councillors have always been keen to ensure the new centre included vital space for the community as well as sports facilities.

John Etherington, chairman of Midhurst Town Council, said: “We are delighted final agreement has been reached to undertake the building of a new 21st-century leisure and community centre.”

Cllr Eileen Lintill said: “It may have appeared we’d gone quiet about the centre over the past few months, but a huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes.”
