POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 20-year-old man was knocked unconscious in brutal assault in Chichester in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim was walking home with a friend after an evening out in the city when he was attacked at 1.30am in College Lane, police said.

He was knocked unconscious and suffered multiple fractures to his jaw that required an operation at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, to insert metal plates.

A single suspect is believed to have been responsible.

Police have described him as a white man, aged between 20 and 30, 5ft 4inch tall, of stocky build and with short dark hair and dark clothing.

Detective Constable Amanda Gamlin, of Chichester CID, said: “We would like to talk to anyone who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed the incident or seen a small dark coloured car being driven erratically.”

Anyone able to help is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 736 of 18/5.

Alternatively, anyone with any information can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers without having to leave their name on 0800555111.
