POLICE are appealing for witnesses after fire severely damaged a Grade I listed building in Petworth Park.

About 2.20pm on March 22, a member of the public raised the alarm after seeing the 18th-century Gothic colt house on the western side of Petworth Park was on fire.

Firefighters from Midhurst and Petworth were called to the scene to tackle the blaze in the disused outbuilding.

It is believed the fire was the work of vandals and residents took to social media at the time to condemn the attack as a ‘mindless act’.

A spokesman for the National Trust said it
was believed to be the only colt house the trust cared for and it hoped it would be restored.

Anyone who saw anything or has any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting serial 789 of 22/3.
