A presentation has been made to former Midhurst town councillor John Etherington who served for more than 30 years and was its chairman for the last six years until he resigned in February.

Mark Purves, who was elected chairman in his place, paid tribute to Mr Etherington’s years of service to the town at the council’s annual meeting in the Old Library.

He presented Mr Etherington with a framed set of pictures highlighting some of the major events during his time as chairman of the town council.

He joined the council in May 1983 and was the only town councillor left who had been elected by voters.
