The expected planning application for oil drilling at Markwell’s Wood, Forestside, near Rowlands Castle, has been validated by the South Downs National Park Authority and can be seen on the park’s website.
It has been submitted by UK Oil & Gas Investments for the conventional production of oil, incorporating the drilling of one side track well from the existing well, three new hydrocarbon wells and one water injection well. The company wants permission to produce hydrocarbons from all four wells for a 20 year period.
Many residents attended a special meeting of Stoughton Parish Council held on Monday (October 3) where they expressed concerns about the project and the council agreed to send in a letter of objection.
Local resident Emily Mott said: “We were extremely pleased to see so many locals engaged in this as it will affect us all in the future. And we are very glad that the parish councillors took on board our concerns. This scheme has no place in our beautiful, tranquil area.”
The South Downs National Park Authority will be making a decision on the project and a public consultation ends on Friday, October 28. Residents have formed Markwells Wood Watch and are seeking funds towards paying experts to help them.
