Barring a miracle, an event which has brought thrills, spills and fun to the August bank holiday weekend in Midhurst for three decades will not be held this year.
The main organiser of the River Rother Raft Race has announced the event looks certain to be cancelled, unless someone steps in at the last minute to keep it afloat.
Lodsworth businessman Anthony Weller warned in February that work commitments would mean he could not take responsibility for the 2012 race, which would be the 31st in the race’s history.
But this week, with a month to go, he said: “Despite our coverage in the paper and the information on the Rother Raft Race website, no-one has come forward to run the race and I fear we are running out of time.
