THE UK’s largest and most popular contemporary choir is to start a new session in Billingshurst, every Wednesday from September.
Rock Choir has more than 16,000 members in communities including Horsham, Chichester, Arundel, Littlehampton, Worthing and Bognor Regis.
It was started in 2005, by award-winning singer Caroline Redman Lusher who set out to create a modern, contemporary choir for adults and teenagers who love to sing. Caroline is now recognised as being responsible for the contemporary choir movement in the UK.
In October 2012 she received the music industry’s Gold Badge Award from the British Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) in association with the Performing Rights Society (PRS), for her ‘exceptional’ contribution to British music.
Rock Choir members in Sussex have flashmobbed Chichester Assembly Rooms for Comic Relief, broken a Guinness World Record, and last year helped raise more than £1m for charity.
Local Rock Choir leader Vickie Hewitt will be starting the new sessions and to give people a taste of what is in store, she will run a free 90-minute taster session on Wednesday, from 8pm-9.30pm, at the Billingshurst Centre, Roman Way, Billingshurst.
“I’m inviting adults and teenagers in the local community to come along and sing their hearts out,” says Vickie. “It’s going to be a fun, lively session.
“You don’t need to read music and there are no auditions. Just turn up and join in!”
Rock Choir welcomes everyone, and its uplifting ethos of fun, friendship and community spirit is a big part of its attraction.
The choir was the subject of the ITV1 documentary The Choir That Rocks, and has performed sell-out shows at venues including The 02, Wembley Arena and The Royal Albert Hall.
