Rogate launches bid to save its pub

Rogate villagers are launching a community bid to save their pub, The White Horse, which brewers say is temporarily closed while they look for new tenants.

It is the only pub left in the village since the closure of the Wyndham Arms on the corner of the A272 and North Street in 2004, which has since become a private house.

For several years landlord and landlady Trudy and Ron Coles ran a successful business at the White Horse getting involved in village life, but after their retirement in 2013 a succession of landlords failed to follow their lead.

Harveys, who own it, say the pub is temporarily closed.

Now Brian Allison, former chairman of the village hall committee and new chairman Emma Yellop have launched a bit to save it.

“We are trying to get it made a community asset by Chichester District Council,” said Emma, “then we will have the potential to buy it. Camera are lobbying on our behalf and we are building up support in the community to show the brewery we are serious. It is the heart of our community and we need the pub. It is a historic building, part of our heritage and has been a pub since the 1750s.”

“To lose the only pub left in Rogate would be horrendous,” added Brian. “It would be awful to be without it. Right there in front of the recreation and sports field it is used after every game of football and cricket and is involved in all events on the recreation ground including the annual fete.”
